TAMPA, Fla. — In concert with its upcoming Under the Cuban Sun exhibition, the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts (FMoPA) will explore the nuanced history and culture of Cuba with an open-mic night on Nov. 3.
The open-mic night, titled Voices of Cuba, is open to the public. Anyone with an authentic testimony about Cuba or Cuban culture is invited to share. Presenters from all cultures and backgrounds are invited to participate. All forms of storytelling are welcome. Poetry, songs, anecdotes, personal mementos, letters, recipes, objects and, of course, photographs are a few examples of things that guests can share.
―Tampa has such a unique relationship with Cuba, and photography is only one of many ways that people can explore their thoughts and emotions about our Caribbean neighbor,‖ said FMoPA Executive Director Zora Carrier, Ph.D. ―The open-mic night is a multi-genre outlet for the Tampa community to share its stories.‖
Testimonies can be in English or Spanish. The event will be moderated in English by spoken-word artist Andresia ―Real‖ Moseley.
Guests are encouraged to arrive early so they can visit FMoPA’s Under the Cuban Sun Exhibition before the event begins.
Under the Cuban Sun is a black-and-white photographic exploration of Cuba from the 1930s to today. Generously sponsored by Susie and Mitchell Rice and Stanton Storer, the exhibition will be on view in the second-floor galleries from Sept. 22-Dec. 21.
Voices of Cuba will be held at the museum from 5-7 p.m. on Nov. 3. The event is free for members. A regular admission price of $10 will apply for not-yet members. If you are interested in presenting or would like more information, please email info@fmopa.org or call the museum at (813) 221-2222.
