Hillsborough Community College District Board of Trustees adds student trustee to policymaking body

August 25, 2017 by Post

Tampa, FL – The Hillsborough Community College (HCC) District Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the selection of Luis Mesias as the first student member of the District Board of Trustees. Luis is an electrical engineering student, an honors ambassador, a resident adviser and a member of several national honors organizations.

The student trustee position was created at the direction of the Board of Trustees to provide a student perspective to policymaking decisions.  As an ex officio member of the board, Luis will have the opportunity to share issues and policies that directly affect the HCC student population.

“I don’t want to just make this my opportunity; I want to make this an opportunity for all students,” said Luis Mesias.

“Our board wanted to ensure that we were mindful of the impact to our students in all decisions that come before us,” said Board Chair Dipa Shah. “Having a student trustee will provide all of our students with that voice.”

Luis is one of only two student trustees in the entire state of Florida. The only other student trustee represents Palm Beach State College.

Hillsborough Community College serves over 45,000 students annually at its five campuses located throughout Tampa Bay. The college is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. For more information, visit hccfl.edu.
