City to Celebrate Purchase of Woodson Museum
St. Petersburg, Fla. (August 14, 2017) – City officials and community visionaries will gather to rededicate the Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American History Museum, 2240 Ninth Ave. S. in St. Petersburg, on Sunday, August 20, beginning at 3:15 p.m.
A garden reception will follow, from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m., featuring live entertainment and refreshments. The public is also invited to enjoy the museum’s current Exhibition, “My Afrika-Art” by Gary L. Lemons and the City of St. Petersburg’s ‘South of Central’ Poster Gallery on display.
At the request of Mayor Rick Kriseman, the process for the City to purchase the Woodson Museum from the St. Petersburg Housing Authority was authorized and approved by St. Petersburg City Council on July 23, 2015. The purchase of the museum building and adjacent Legacy Garden from the St. Petersburg Housing Authority was completed on May 30, 2017.
On April 20, 2017, City Council authorized the City’s Real Estate and Property Management Department to enter into a five-year agreement for the Woodson Museum Board of Directors to remain as operator of the museum for a term that began June 1, 2017, through 2022.
