Patel Conservatory offers classes for homeschoolers

Tampa, Fla. – To meet the high demand for high quality performing arts homeschool classes, the Patel Conservatory at the Straz Center has expanded offerings for Fall classes to include four new music classes and, for the first time, a dance class. Among homeschool classes offered this 2017-18 school year, which begins the week of September 5, are:

 

American Musical Theater, for those in grades two through 12, offers students an overview of musical theater from historical and performance perspectives. Students explore examples of American musical theater pieces, as well as musical, theatrical and dance styles from throughout the 20th century. This performance-based class culminates in a classroom showcase performance. Class time for American Musical Theater is 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Wednesdays.

 

Theater 1, for those in grades two through 12, allows students to explore basic performance and technical theatrical studies with the goal of preparing, staging and presenting a classroom showcase of a scripted one-act play. Class time for Theater 1 is Wednesdays, 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

 

Young Performing Arts, for those in K3 through first grade, engages students in a sampler of movement, music and theater games while building confidence and enthusiasm. Options for class times, both on Wednesdays, include 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. or a three-hour block from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

 

Performing Arts for Homeschoolers, for those in grades two through 12, allows homeschool and non-traditional students to explore theater, music and movement in an active learning environment. Students explore collaboration through the arts, culminating each semester in an open classroom showcase performance. Class is held Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

 

Beginning Piano, for those in grades two through six, is designed for the beginner who will explore note reading, piano fundamentals and creative improvisation. Class time is Wednesdays, 12:45 to 1:45 p.m.

 

Intro to Violin, for those in grades two through six, is for beginners who will learn to read music while learning the basics of strings technique. This class is held Wednesdays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

 

Intermediate/Advanced Violin, for students with experience in grades four through twelve, will instruct students to improve their techniques. Classes are Wednesdays from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m.

 

Intro to Drumming, for those is grades six through 12, allows children to explore Orff instruments, Boomwhackers and drums in an energetic and fun setting. Students will play music from around the world, while learning basic music reading applied to performing with percussion instruments. Classes are held Wednesdays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

 

Guitar, for those in grades seven through 12, teaches beginning guitar students the basics of playing guitar, including technique, music reading, chords and tablature. Students are expected to have their own guitar, preferably acoustic. Classes are Wednesdays from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m.

 

Chorus, for those in grades two through 12, pairs general music with performance. Students develop strong singing technique and musical expression and explore exciting repertoire chosen to develop singing techniques. Chorus is taught on Wednesdays, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

 

Youth Tap Dance, for those in grades three through five, introduces children to the basic steps and rhythms of tap dance. Students put steps together in combinations they find both challenging and fun. Classes are held Wednesdays 12:45 to 1:45 p.m.
