SARASOTA, FL – Two recent graduates of New College’s master’s degree program in data science have joined the research team at the Florence A. Rothman Institute (FARI) in Sarasota. Erin Craig and Carlos Arias are data scientists at the non-profit institute that focuses on using data analytics to uncover new evidence-based strategies to improve patient care.
“Erin Craig and Carlos Arias are talented professionals who add to the capabilities of our leading-edge research organization,” said G. Duncan Finlay, MD, president and CEO, FARI, and chief medical officer of Alive Sciences in Sarasota, “We have a strong partnership with New College and are very pleased to welcome these graduates to our growing organization.”
Craig, who works with FARI’s medical records team to improve health care, holds an M.S. in data science and a B.A. in mathematics from New College of Florida. Before returning to school for her master’s degree, she worked at Wolfram Research, where she led teams that were developing math content for Wolfram|Alpha and educational technologies for Wolfram Research, including Step-by-Step Solutions and the Wolfram Problem Generator.
Arias’ primary research interest is developing machine learning tools for the healthcare environment. He is currently researching the use of deep learning and text analysis to provide better quality of care for hospital patients.
Arias’ academic background includes psychology and education courses as well as software development. Having worked with several software companies, he is also a software consultant with a Miami startup.
“Too many college graduates leave the Gulf Coast in search of technology positions, and it is a pleasure to keep these talented young scientists in Sarasota,” Finlay said. “They will accelerate our efforts to improve the delivery of healthcare and enhance the quality of life for all patients.”
