Twenty-five young designers, ages 8-16, showcase colorful fashions they created from repurposed and unconventional materials in an exciting runway fashion show.
(Sarasota, FL) Art Center Sarasota presents the second annual “iconcept jr” runway event, Sunday, September 24, noon to 2 p.m., at Art Center Sarasota, 707 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. The event features a runway fashion show of outfits and accessories created from unconventional materials by artists and designers, ages 8-16. General admission tickets, which include a buffet lunch, are $50 for adults; $25 for people under 18. VIP tickets are $75 and include a seat at the runway. Proceeds from ticket sales help benefit Art Center Sarasota’s youth scholarships and education outreach programs. To purchase tickets, visit www.artsarasota.org/iconceptjror call 941-365-2032.
According to Lisa Berger, the founder of the original “iconcept” runway event, which is celebrating its 10th year as one of the region’s most distinctive fundraisers, iconcept jr was developed to challenge emerging artists and designers, ages 8 to 16. Berger says some of these young people attend Fashion Bootcamp at the center during the school year and summer where they learn how to create wearable fashions and accessories using recycled and repurposed materials along with fabric. The students work directly with iconcept artists to learn, firsthand, the intricacies of fashion design, construction, creative thinking and problem-solving.
“We were amazed by what these young designers created for the inaugural event last year,” says Berger. “The Art Center’s mission is to promote creativity and we believe that giving young people the opportunity to express themselves creatively by providing access to something they have passion for will help them throughout their lives.”
Sponsorship opportunities for the 2017 iconcept jr are still available. For more information on becoming a sponsor, call 941-365-2032 or email Lisa Berger at lisa@artsarasota.org.
About Art Center Sarasota
Art Center Sarasota was the first arts and cultural institution in Sarasota. It was founded in 1926 as the “Sarasota Art Association” by Marcia Rader, the art supervisor for the Sarasota County schools district. In the early years, the group met monthly and sponsored exhibits in rented facilities. The Association was incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in 1943 and has been in its current location in the Sarasota Bayfront Cultural District since 1949. Art Center Sarasota is now a membership-based organization that offers curated and juried exhibitions, adult and youth education programs, outreach initiatives for underserved youth, and culturally related public programming. Art Center Sarasota’s mission is to inspire individual creative expression, nurture artistic talent and provide the community with accessible and diverse visual art opportunities.
