BRADENTON, Fla. — Interventional pain management specialist Dr. Richard H. Bundschu with Coastal Orthopedics Sports Medicine & Pain Management was among the contributors to the SENZA-RCT 24-Month Outcomes Publication, which was selected as the Top Pain Paper of the Year by Neurosurgery.
Neurosurgery, the official journal of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), selected the pivotal study, which is at the forefront of a possible shift in the way pain management physicians help their patients manage chronic neck and arm pain.
Dr. Bundschu is one of the principal investigators for the Nevro study — a landmark clinical trial to test the effectiveness of the Silicon Valley-based medical device company’s spinal cord stimulators in treating ongoing neck and upper extremity body pain. Spinal cord stimulators have previously been used to treat chronic pain in the lower back, torso and legs when pain medications, injections and physical therapy are ineffective.
It’s the largest prospective randomized clinical trial ever conducted to assess the treatment of chronic back and leg pain, and the first to evaluate comparative effectiveness of spinal cord stimulation (SCS) therapies.
“I am proud to be a part of this groundbreaking and significant study,” said Dr. Bundschu. “Coastal Orthopedics was one of six locations nationwide selected to participate in the Nevro study, which began in June 2012, and since that time, it has yielded promising results.”
Dr. Bundschu worked with Nevro on two prior studies, including a low back study, which helped the company’s groundbreaking products earn U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval.
Each paper, beginning with initial selection from the pool of papers published between June 2016 and June 2017, was subject to a rigorous review process by Neurosurgery’s editorial board.
