Sarasota County is seeking name nominations for three preserve sites

SARASOTA COUNTY – Sarasota County is asking the public to submit names for environmental lands in East County, including the Churchill Ranch, Jordyn Holdings and Carlton Ranch sites.
These three sites are adjacent to the T. Mabry Carlton, Jr. Memorial Reserve and were purchased through the Environmentally Sensitive Lands Protection Program. Together, the three sites protect 5,665 acres of native habitat.
County staff will share maps, aerials, habitat types, sighted wildlife and plant species, and history for the three sites from 5:30-6:30 p.m., Thursday, July 13, at the Sarasota County Administration Building, 1660 Ringling Blvd. Staff will also be accepting name suggestions from the public at this meeting. Deadline for name submission is 5 p.m., Wednesday, July 19.
Per Section 2-2 of the Sarasota County Code, the lands will be named for one or more of the following:
Selection criteria:
 

1) Geographic location: clearly located or associated with a distinct portion of the county.

2) Historical value: specific historical value or significance to the county.

3) Individual or group: must fulfill at least one of the following:

  • A well-known, elected, appointed or volunteer community leader.
  • An individual or group who has positively influenced a large populace of the county through a significant contribution of money, time or material.
  • An individual or group who had a major involvement in the acquisition or development of the facility.
  • An individual or group whose civic leadership contributed to the betterment of the community.
