HILLSBOROUGH & PINELLAS COUNTIES – CareerSource Tampa Bay and CareerSource Pinellas were recently awarded funding from CareerSource Florida to enhance efforts to develop the expanding workforce in the local high-growth technology industry. Within these two organizations, funding was granted to support Tampa Bay’s national TechHire Community designation to provide talent development and worker training in Information Technology and Healthcare careers.
Building on the White House’s selection of Tampa Bay as one of more than 70 TechHire Communities nationwide, this funding will support the development of micro-communities within the umbrella of TechHire, which will be composed of regional representatives from business, education, and economic development organizations. Advisory groups will focus on developing resources and gather labor market data with the goal to provide local workers the skills for a pathway to the middle class while supplying employers with the skilled technology workers needed to grow and expand. The micro-communities will be a step forward in reducing the skills gap for technology jobs and in decreasing the reliance on H-1B visas for technology workers. In addition to this designation, CareerSource Tampa Bay received a $3.8 million Department of Labor grant in July 2016 to advance the TechHire initiative. This program will build the talent pipeline by providing no-cost accelerated training, certification and employment opportunities in these fields to more than 1,000 unemployed and underemployed young adults ages 17-29.
