PALMETTO, Fla. – This week, commercial construction company Halfacre Construction Company (HalfacreConstruction.com) broke ground on a new warehouse and freezer building for the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.
The new pre-engineered metal building will be used for food storage at the Port Manatee jail. Started on May 15, the 12,250-square-foot structure with have a 1,800-square-foot freezer inside. The county currently feeds 1,100 inmates, three times a day at the Central Jail.
“This new building will save taxpayer dollars by allowing the Manatee Sheriff’s Office to purchase food in bulk in addition to receiving donations from local farmers in the community” said Major Daniel Kaufman, Corrections Bureau Chief at the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office. “Additionally, the freezers are more energy efficient and will utilize less energy than the portable refrigeration trailers currently used to keep the food cold or frozen as it’s used.”
Located at the Port Manatee at 14470 Harlee Road in Palmetto, the $1.9 million project is slated for completion in October 2017.
