The Pasco-Hernando State College (PHSC) intercollegiate athletics department hosted a Student Athletics Awards Banquet on Monday, April 17 at the West Campus in New Port Richey.
Each year, one female and one male PHSC student athlete who demonstrate excellence in the classroom, on the fields and courts, in leadership on campus, and with service in the community is selected by the PHSC coaching staff to receive the prestigious Dr. Debra J. Hay Outstanding Student Athlete Award. Hay was a former dean of student services, and an advocate for student athletes who encouraged excellence. The 2017 Dr. Debra J. Hay Outstanding Student Athlete Award winners are:
Marffee Simbulan, PHSC sophomore from West Florida High School, Pensacola, Fla., women’s cross country, holds a 3.94 grade point average. Simbulan’s community service projects have included participation in a Phi Theta Kappa roadside clean-up event and the Special Olympics. A team player who carries her positive attitude through countless hours of studying and tutoring fellow students, Simbulan will graduate in May with her Associate in Arts degree.
Bailey Partlow, PHSC sophomore from Westfield High School in Westfield, Indiana, men’s baseball, carries a 3.52 grade point average. Team captain and starting catcher for two years, Partlow has a career batting average of .308. His community service has included the annual Forest Lakes community park cleanup, the PHSC Run with the Quistas 5K and speaking to students at Bishop Larkin Catholic School about earning good grades, healthy living and saying no to drugs. Partlow will graduate with his Associate in Arts degree this May.
“These exemplary student leaders have inspired their teammates and deserve recognition for their achievements as students, athletes and members of the college community,” said Steve Winterling, PHSC athletic director and men’s baseball head coach.
Other recognition included the naming of the 2016-2017 most outstanding players for each intercollegiate sport at PHSC. Winners include: Marisa French (sophomore), co-ed cheerleading; Charlene Sanchez (sophomore), cross county; Kylyn Burbine (freshman), half-marathon; Danielle Christian (sophomore), volleyball; Charles Isaac (sophomore), men’s basketball; Angelica Venzia (sophomore), women’s softball; and Alex Reynolds (sophomore), men’s baseball.
