TAMPA, FL (April 19, 2017) – Over 130 Hillsborough County women will be donning purple hard hats and swinging purple hammers as they come together for “Women Build” to construct a Habitat for Humanity home for a single mother and her four children. The Women Build construction site, co-sponsored by Skanska and TCM Bank, officially opens to volunteers at 8 a.m., Saturday, April 22nd, when the first team of women volunteers will be working with Candice Cowen to raise the roof trusses on the home for her children.
Women Build is the first women-themed construction event for Habitat for Humanity of Hillsborough County. In addition to helping fund construction of the Cowen family home, both Skanska and TCM Bank will have several staff members volunteer on the build site. More than 1,200 volunteer hours will have been invested in the Cowen home when Women Build completes all phases of construction in early June.
Cowen, whose oldest daughter is a cancer survivor, has faced financial challenges providing adequate and safe housing for her children. “I’m so grateful to have been accepted into the Habitat program and have the chance to own a home of my own and a safe place to raise my kids,” said Cowen. “I’m also very excited to work alongside so many amazing women who want to help build my home.”
