Sarasota County Sports Commission and University of Central Florida To Serve as Hosts
Sarasota, Fla. (April 20, 2017) While Nathan Benderson Park is the venue for the 2018 NCAA Rowing Championships which take place in one year, it has already been selected by the organization as the venue for its Division I, II, and III Women’s Rowing Championships in 2021 and 2022. The competitions will take place May 28-30, 2021 and May 27-29, 2022. The Sarasota County Sports Commission and the University of Central Florida will serve as the host institutions.
According to the NCAA, there are numerous criteria for selecting host sites. Among them are creating an exceptional experience for the student-athletes, and adherence to NCAA bid specifications. These specifications include, but are not limited to, providing optimal facilities; ease of travel to the location and ample lodging; as well as strict observance of NCAA principles that require delivering an atmosphere that is safe and respects the dignity of all attendees.
“There is no doubt Nathan Benderson Park, along with the Sarasota-Bradenton Community, meet the NCAA’s criteria and we are honored to be recognized for what we have to offer here,” said Robert J. Sullivan, CEO and president of Suncoast Aquatic Nature Center Associates Inc., (SANCA) the non-profit that manages the park. “We are pleased to provide to the community, the athletes and visitors that come to our venue the best experience possible so they will want to return. The NCAA’s announcement has confirmed that we are doing it right.”
In addition to the NCAA championships, Nathan Benderson Park has hosted numerous regional, national and international events including the FSRA championships, USRowing’s Youth Nationals Championships, 2016 Olympic Trials and the Modern Pentathlon. This fall, the park will host its biggest event to date–the 2017 World Rowing Championships which will see athletes from more than 60 countries vying for coveted rowing titles. It will take place September 23 – October 1.
