Hillsborough Community College’s dance program and the School of Visual and Performing Arts presents the annual spring dance concert on April 20th – 22nd at 7:30 p.m. in the Mainstage Theatre at the Ybor City Campus.
The HCC Dance Ensemble will perform works by faculty and guest choreographers.
This year’s concert includes:
• COPY ≠ ORIGINAL by Christina Acosta, this work imagines a clone driven dystopian future in which human traits have been stripped down to data driven numeric formulas.
• THE VILLAGE, created in collaboration with the dancers and conceived by HCC faculty member, Heather Ahern, is an excerpt from a larger work entitled In Full Flight: An Exploration of the Dance of the Modern Traveler. The Village examines the wonders and drawbacks of contemporary travel, and features flying luggage, athletic partnering, cheeky lounge music, and an insightful interview with a recovering frequent traveler.
• MAN IPULATION, a new work choreographed by Julie Harlan which explores how we assimilate aspects of each other’s personalities while still maintaining our sense of self. It questions what happens when one person dominates or another refuses to follow the crowd.
• MANYOSHU, by Richard Allan Ploch is based on Japanese lyrics from the Manyoshu, the oldest existing collection of Japanese poetry, compiled sometime after 759 A.D. during the Nara period.
The concert also includes a guest performance by Charlotte Johnson in Beyond Words, choreographed by Paula Kramer. Determined to be remembered, Holocaust prisoners wrote messages to the world on the walls of their cells and on the trains that carried them there.
The Mainstage Theatre is in the performing arts building of the Ybor City Campus. It is located at the corner of E Palm Ave and N 14th Street (Avenida Republica de Cuba). All performances are at 7:30 p.m. General admission is $10.00. All HCC students, faculty and staff are admitted free of charge with valid ID. The box office opens a half hour prior to the performance.
