Dr. Black busy as ever as speaker USFSM’s Dr. Kathy Black continues to be in high demand as a speaker. The professor of aging studies and social work, who also heads the local non-profit Age-Friendly Sarasota, was at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Sarasota this week to address city officials and members of the Downtown Sarasota Condo Association. The DSCA held a Thursday luncheon, “Optimal Living in Sarasota,” that touched on topics important to Age-Friendly Sarasota, in particular around housing, transportation and the need for walkable neighborhoods. “These are issues important to everybody,” said Dr. Black, noting that while Sarasota enjoys a sizeable boomer population, all generations benefit from walkable communities that are also easily accessed by public transportation. “The promotion of intergenerational relationships and the consideration of people of all ages will always be important if we want to create communities that welcome all people,” she said. “To me, it’s about the social level of planning. We need to plan for longevity so that people can remain in their homes as they age.” Next Friday, Dr. Black visits Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater to address representatives of area agencies on aging from Pinellas and Pasco counties. She’s the keynote speaker at this luncheon and will speak with officials from local, state and federal governments.
