This season, Stantec and the Tampa Bay Lightning have partnered again to help continue the education of three deserving students from the Bay area through the Hillsborough Education Foundation’s (HEF) Take Stock in Children program. During last Saturday’s contest against the Montreal Canadians, Stantec awarded three students with a scholarship of $9,810 which includes a match from the Hillsborough Education Foundation. Gabriel Brown, a 9th grader at Steinbrenner High School, Zachary Frankowiak a 9th grader at Plant City High School and Lesli Facio, a 9th grader at Jefferson High School were awarded the scholarships during the game on Saturday after an extensive essay and interview process.
Stantec teamed up with HEF to collaborate on the importance of STEM in local schools. From November 2016 to January 2017, students were given the opportunity to apply for scholarships through HEF. After the application period, they sorted through thousands of applicants and identified 400-plus eligible scholars in Hillsborough County. Students from 6th to 9th grade who applied for this program were required to write an essay based on character building experiences and the influence those had on their life so far. The HEF staff narrowed the pool of potential candidates to fit the STEM criteria. From that pool, Stantec and the Lightning reviewed the applications and interviewed the potential candidates to choose the three scholarship recipients.
“This scholarship represents Stantec’s values on many levels. We’re supporting STEM/STEAM, we’re encouraging future leaders, and we’re investing in our local communities. What an honor to be involved with this great program!” said Kim Austin, Vice President, Regional Marketing & Communications at Stantec.
All three winners were surprised and honored at the Lightning home game in front of their family, friends and peers. Stantec and HEF presented each winner with a check for $9,810, going directly to their college education.
