(SARASOTA, Fla., April 5, 2017) Workers’ Compensation and how employers can protect themselves is the focus of Manasota SCORE’s Success Strategies for Business Owners Meetup on April 11.
Brian S. Fischer, P.L., an attorney who teaches other attorneys and insurance carriers about the details of workers’ compensation insurance, will discuss critical issues facing employers, including how to protect themselves from carrier audits and audits by the Florida Department of Financial Services.
Fischer will cover significant changes in workers’ compensation since 2003 laws that reduced rates, shifted the underwriting burden from carriers to employers, limited plaintiff attorney fees and imposed limitations on benefits for insured workers. He will also address Supreme Court cases that undid some of the 2003 legislative reforms and how the upcoming session might deal with these issues.
Fischer is the author of an analysis of the Florida workers’ compensation system, entitled “Florida Workers’ Compensation and the Perpetual Insurance Crisis.” A partner in Premium Disputes, he is a long-standing member and past chair of a state Premium Fraud Task Force and was a founding member of a 501(c)(3) organization that studied and lobbied for reform of the state workers’ compensation system. He has served as general counsel and head of the claims department for a multi-state workers’ compensation carrier, and he has represented businesses appealing adverse decisions before the Florida Workers’ Compensation Appeals Board.
The Meetup will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Community Foundation of Sarasota County, 2635 Fruitville Road, Sarasota, FL 34237.
