SARASOTA, Fla. (March 14, 2017) – Social activist and educator Dr. Charles H.F. Davis III will present a lecture on race and higher education next month at USF Sarasota-Manatee. An education instructor at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Dr. Davis’ courses have focused on activism and social movements in higher education, gender in college and student identity development. He is the director of higher education research and initiatives at the Center for the Study of Race and Equity in Education. Dr. Davis’ lecture, entitled “The Power of Imagination: Rethinking Educational Pathways to Freedom and Liberation,” is set for 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 12, at the Selby Auditorium, 8350 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. His visit comes at the invitation of Dr. Phillip Wagner, the director of general education, core curriculum coordinator and chair of the Chancellor’s Advisory Council on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at USF Sarasota-Manatee. “One of the first things we did this year as a diversity council was identify an engaging speaker to come speak on race and higher education,” Wagner said. “Given how racial tensions have shifted the climate of higher education in the last few years, we wanted to bring a nationally recognized leader like Dr. Davis to our campus community to ensure that USFSM remains passionately committed to inclusion.” In addition to his Wednesday evening address, Dr. Davis will oversee a targeted training session with USFSM’s Council on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. “We want to make sure we are well-equipped to serve all of our students as we continue to grow,” Dr. Wagner said. “Dr. Davis’ work is innovative and we look forward to learning from him.” Davis’ lecture is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served afterward. To register, visit http://usfsm.edu/powerofimagination. ### |
