Spring Hill, Florida (March 13, 2017) – Oak Hill Hospital now performs Coronary Computed Tomography Angiography (CCTA). A CCTA is a type of medical exam that combines the CT scan with an injection of a contrast media to produce pictures of blood vessels and tissues that concentrate on the heart. The contrast is injected through an intravenous (IV) line started in the patient’s arm. The CT focuses on the coronary (heart) blood vessels. The coronary CTA is a heart imaging test that helps physicians determine whether fatty deposits or calcium deposits have built up in coronary arteries. The coronary arteries supply blood flow to the heart which is highlighted during the test using contrast dye. The test is non-invasive and does not require placing a catheter into an artery of the heart. The computed tomography (CT) scanner can scan the entire heart during 10 heartbeats.
The coronary CTA is used to evaluate coronary artery disease and to evaluate a patient’s risk of heart attack. The test can detect small amounts of plaque that can be missed on other exams. It also can detect disease very early before a patient has symptoms.
“The coronary CTA is a benefit for low risk heart patients who present themselves into the ER. Instead of having an invasive cardiac catheterization procedure, they can simply have a scan to rule out artery blockage. The scans are read immediately by our 24/7 onsite radiologists,” said Sue Ruge, Director of Imaging Services at Oak Hill Hospital.
The coronary CTA will utilize the very latest advances in Oak Hill Hospital’s new GE Revolution EVO CT scanner.
