USFSM embraces Dr. Seuss USF Sarasota-Manatee students and faculty enjoyed an engaging assignment last week: They spent a morning at Jessie P. Miller Elementary School in Bradenton reading Dr. Seuss books to children. The unusual assignment was a part of Embracing Dr. Seuss’ Differences Day, an annual event that invites volunteers to read Dr. Seuss’ books to local school children and engage in classroom discussions about diversity and other issues. “It’s meant to bring up important topics to talk about with kids in a fun way,” said Amy Farrington, administrator of USFSM’s Office of Community Outreach. Organized by the Sarasota-based non-profit arts group, Embracing our Differences, the event was held last Thursday on what would have been the 113th birthday of Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel). Farrington read “The Cat in the Hat,” the famous story of two children who encounter a mischievous cat and the cat’s friends, Thing 1 and Thing 2. The cat creates a mess in the children’s home, but miraculously cleans up everything seconds before their mother enters. Stepping inside, she asks the children what they did while she was away, but they don’t answer. The story then asks readers, “What would you do if your mother asked you?” Farrington spent about an hour with the students. After reading the book and displaying the pictures, she led a classroom discussion about honesty. “It was a lot of fun and it was nice to engage with the students,” she said. Hughes to be honored at luncheon Kudos to Todd Hughes, veteran services administrator at USFSM, after Jewish Family & Children’s Services of the Suncoast named him as one of five recipients of the 2017 Tribute to Veterans Service to the Community Award. The Sarasota non-profit has scheduled an awards luncheon May 2 at The Francis banquet hall in downtown. Amanda Evora named an ‘Outstanding Alum’ The USF Alumni Association has announced its 10 Outstanding Young Alumni for 2017, including one from USF Sarasota-Manatee: Amanda Evora, Class of 2012. The alumna was a pairs figure skater at the 2010 Olympics and earned medals in five U.S. championship events. She remains in the Sarasota area and continues to coach skaters, including a group who became national champions. Sponsored by NorthStar Bank, the Outstanding Young Alumni Awards recognize alumni under 35 for their professional accomplishments and engagement with the university.
