High school and undergraduate students who are excelling in the classroom, as well as making a difference in the community, are eligible to receive college scholarships totaling $90,000 this year. GTE Financial announced that it is now accepting applications for its annual scholarship program. Each year, the credit union awards 36 students who have proven leadership skills, ongoing community involvement and strong academics with a $2,500 scholarship to help ease the financial burden of college.
“We are proud to continue this tradition of helping exceptional students fulfill their dreams,” says Brian Best, president and CEO of GTE Financial. “Since we started the program, we’ve helped more than 144 students pay for college. These students are our future and many of them graduate and become influential members of our community.”
Anna Swygert was among the recipients last year. Her father passed away from lung disease, and she vowed to help others suffering from a terminal illness. The scholarship helped her offset costs of her education and brought her one-step closer to fulfilling her dreams.
To qualify for the scholarship, students must be GTE Financial members and the primary account holder at the time of submission. They must be graduating high school seniors or an undergraduate who is continuing to pursue an undergraduate degree. Applicants must demonstrate a strong commitment to community service. The deadline to apply is June 2.
A committee comprised of some of the Bay area’s top professionals will convene on June 21 to judge submissions and select the scholarship winners. GTE Financial will announce award winners at a celebration luncheon on August 16, 2017.
