SARASOTA, Fla. (March 06, 2017) – USF Sarasota-Manatee this fall will offer a minor in statistics to appeal to students across diverse academic disciplines. Statistics – the collection and analysis of data – is frequently used by researchers in science fields, but the discipline has applications in economics, finance, insurance, social sciences and a host of other professions as well. Because of its wide usage, the new minor should have broad appeal to students. “It’s cross-disciplinary, involving parts of the other colleges, so nearly all students can take it,” said mathematics instructor Dr. Joy D’Andrea, who created the minor. The statistics minor will be composed primarily of three required College of Science & Mathematics courses: two calculus courses and a statistics course. However, along with those will be a College of Business course and a choice of electives, including one – interdisciplinary social science statistics – taught in the College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences. “This minor should appeal to a broad cross-section of our students,” said Dr. Terry Osborn, regional vice chancellor for academic and student affairs. “It’s just one example of how USFSM is evolving, by implementing programs with broad real-world applications to benefit both students and our local community.” Dr. D’Andrea said the statistics minor could help students applying for jobs or entering graduate school. “It looks good on a resume and tells employers that you have critical-thinking skills and that you’ve taken more advanced classes,” she said. “It also says that you have strong cognitive abilities and know how to organize information and translate that into files and reports. Employers are looking for those kinds of abilities.” To learn more about the College of Science & Mathematics, visit usfsm.edu/csm/. ### |
