(LARGO, FL – OCTOBER 2016) – The Transplant Institute of Florida (TIF) at Largo Medical Center is now evaluating patients for liver transplantation. The hospital is approved by The United Network for Organ Sharing* (UNOS) to perform liver transplants at the hospital’s Transplant Institute of Florida (TIF). UNOS is the private, non-profit organization that manages our nation’s organ transplant system under contract with the federal government. This means UNOS will be involved in many aspects of the TIF’s liver transplantation as well as respective organ donation.
“There are about 17,000 people waiting for liver transplants and more than 6,000 liver transplants happening per year in the United States,” said TIF Chief and Transplant and Hepatobiliary Pancreatic Surgeon, Hussein Osman-Mohamed, MD, PhD, FACS. “While we are now accepting patients for evaluation to be put on our transplant listing, we will also be working diligently to educate the public about organ donation.”
If there are patients awaiting transplantation in other areas of the country, TIF can accept any patient’s transfer while keeping their same placement on the waiting list. Dr. Osman-Mohamed also oversees the hospital’s Hepatobiliary Center that includes treating diseases of the liver, pancreas and gall bladder. Largo Medical Center has performed 40 kidney transplants since the Transplant Institute of Florida opened in 2015.
“Largo Medical Center is excited to expand our transplant services to Pinellas County residents as well as those living beyond our area,” said Anthony Degina, Chief Executive Officer, Largo Medical Center. “Candidates who have been on liver transplant waiting lists, now have another option offering superior care close to home.”
Largo Medical Center is one of 8 hospitals statewide approved to provide liver transplants and one of 12 approved for kidney transplants. It was back in March 2014, that the hospital announced the highly specialized TIF would be opening.
