With room scale precision tracking and top notch visuals the HTC Vive has rightfully been considered the best virtual reality you can experience today. Except in the comfort and convenience department, where the Vive struggles with cumbersome straps that pull it against your face, causing discomfort after even moderate use. HTC has recognized this short coming and recently announced the Deluxe Audio Strap that is more rigid than the stock straps. However, the new strap suffers from the same issue of resting the entire 1.2lbs of the Vive directly on the user’s face.
SynergyWiz believes there is a better solution and is launching the rEvolve Kickstarter on January 10th to achieve just that. The rEvolve is a rigid head strap that easily replaces the current straps on the Vive. It takes the weight of the Vive off the user’s face and rests it gently on the user’s forehead. It achieves a perfectly centered balance to the headset by shifting almost all the weight of the rEvolve towards the back of the head. This provides a magical feeling of a weightless screen hovering right in front of the user’s face.
In addition to making the Vive the most comfortable VR experience possible, the rEvolve adds additional features not seen in consumer VR headsets to date. Most notably among them is rEvolve’s flip up display that allows the Vive to be flipped up at a moment’s notice, revealing the real world without the user having to remove the headset. Other notable features of rEvolve include headphones that now sit just outside the user’s ears and thinner padding around the eyes that increase the user’s field of view.
The product release announcement was made by lead product developer and Vice President of SynergyWiz, John Toner. John commented on their latest product, “with the weight of the Vive perfectly center balanced on the users forehead, the rEvolve lets the headset be an afterthought and provides users with the next level of virtual presence. Then when the user needs a drink, to talk to someone, or just see what’s in front of them, they can flip the Vive up and regain their sight in the real world. As an avid VR user myself, I can tell you these features are groundbreaking.”
Toner further explained, “revolutionary functionality is great, but if it is not easy to use no one will. This is why the rEvolve attaches to the Vive with the turn of a couple knobs using the existing strap connections. It then fits to any users head by squeezing a single handle and sliding the rEvolve for a perfect fit.”
It is SynergyWiz’s goal for these improvements to remove the comfort and convenience barriers for virtual reality, and help broaden VR’s appeal as a whole.
The company is polishing rEvolve’s final design, and moving to manufacturing shortly after that. Please reach out to the consulting firm for rEvolve, Steve Toner at Coastal Strategies, for any additional information.
