Commissioner Paul Caragiulo, District 2
SARASOTA COUNTY – The Board of County Commissioners selected Paul Caragiulo, District 2, as chairman and Nancy C. Detert, District 3, as vice chair for 2017 during its annual retreat Friday. Michael A. Moran will serve as Pro Tem.
The chairman presides at commission meetings. The commissioners voted to select the positions, which are effective Jan. 1. The votes were unanimous.
Current Chairman Alan Maio will continue serving in that role for the remainder of 2016. Caragiulo currently serves as the vice chairman.
Caragiulo called the selection “a great honor” and said he is looking forward to leading the board into a new year.
“There are some really important things we have to address,” Caragiulo said. “I think the community can be confident that we are going to continue to be responsive and responsible in representing them.”
Caragiulo was elected to the Sarasota County Commission in 2014. He served as a City of Sarasota commissioner from 2011-14.
Caragiulo grew up on Long Island’s South Shore, a few miles outside of New York City. At a young age, he became interested in public service and civic affairs. He and his wife, Nikki, live in the Granada neighborhood with their two daughters, Sophie and Caroline, both of whom attend Sarasota County schools.
Detert and Moran began their first terms on the commission in November.
