Spring Hill, Florida [December 5, 2016] –Oak Hill Hospital has partnered with Javelin IO Solutions to help medical residents improve interpersonal skills through a cloud-based, video simulation program. Like a clinical simulation, the interpersonal skills video simulation allows residents to develop and train in key areas necessary to effectively communicate with patients, peers, and leaders at the hospital.
In a pilot conducted earlier this year, results showed that after only three weeks of access to the individualized feedback and training modules, Oak Hill Hospital incoming medical residents improved their performance on these simulations, on average, by 25 percent. “Javelin’s program allowed us to help our incoming residents practice critical behaviors in teamwork, leadership and patient-centric communication in a safe environment,” stated Salman Muddassir MD, the GME Internal Medicine Program Director. “It was just like a clinical simulation with very real life scenarios that helped our residents work on the soft skills they need to thrive in today’s healthcare environment. The feedback we received from our residents was very positive. In fact, we’ve found this program to be so effective that we’re expanding this program to all the internal medicine residents,” he added.
According to a Wall Street Journal Online/Harris Interactive health-care poll, patients often place more importance on doctors’ interpersonal skills than their medical judgment or experience. Edward P. Nast MD, Chief Medical Officer of Oak Hill Hospital, believes that physicians with better communication and interpersonal skills are able to detect problems earlier. “This can prevent medical crises and expensive intervention, and provide better support to our patients,” said Dr. Nast. Research has shown that this may lead to higher-quality outcomes and better satisfaction, lower costs of care, greater patient understanding of health issues, and better adherence to the treatment process.
