Southwest FL – Michael’s on East served a pre-Thanksgiving Turkey luncheon and the membership voted in a new slate of Officers and Directors for 2017. The incoming Officers are: President – RADM Brian McCarthy, USN (Ret); 1st Vice President – LtCol Ron Wozniak, USMC (Ret); 2nd Vice President – Capt Perry Korszen, USMCR; Secretary – Peter Dering, Maj, USAF (Ret); and Treasurer – Christa Friedlander. The new Officers & Directors will be installed and assume their offices at the MOAS Military Gala on Dec 11, 2016.
After the meal and the election, Susan Howarth, president of WEDU, the local affiliate of PBS, started her stimulating speech with a short video highlighting some of the great programming they have provided over past 58 years. She told the membership about the free educational resources available to students and some of the new programming being released next year. Susan also explained some surprising facts about WEDU; only 11% of their $9 million annual budget comes from state and federal funds, and a full 61% of their funding comes from individual donors in our community who realize the importance of the work they do.
Susan took this opportunity to introduce Larry Winegar, the new WEDU Philanthropy Officer for Sarasota and Manatee counties. He will interact with existing and new giving donors for the support of WEDU’s programming.
Jack Conely, the WEDU Vice President of Content, then took the stage and played a video sampling some of the veteran related programming from the last 10 years. He explained the new Emmy- nominated Telling Project, in which Florida military veterans tell their personal stories through dramatic performances on stage. Jack also got the membership excited about the new Ken Burns Vietnam War documentary coming in September 2017. More information about the abundance of programming from WEDU is available online at http://www.wedu.org/.
