SARASOTA, Fla. (Dec. 2, 2016) Local veterans and supporters of the military are invited to USF Sarasota-Manatee on Dec. 7 for an event commemorating the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
The ceremony, which begins with the presentation of colors by Vietnam Brotherhood Alpha Company, will start at 4 p.m. in the courtyard at USF Sarasota-Manatee, 8350 N. Tamiami Trail Sarasota, FL 34243.
Free food and drinks will be offered. A World War II-era Jeep and cargo truck will be on display. Additionally, local World War II and Pearl Harbor veterans will be honored.
Ret. Col. Linda Gould (Army) will be the keynote speaker. Col. Gould, a longtime supporter of veterans’ causes, worked with The Patterson Foundation to build Patriot Plaza, a 2,800-seat ceremonial amphitheater at Sarasota National Cemetery.
“This ceremony is important to us because after 75 years, there are not many World War II veterans who are still with us, and while they are here we thought it was important to remember and recognize those who have done so much, and sacrificed so much, for our country,” said Todd Hughes, veteran services administrator at USFSM.
Sarasota-based law firm The Law Place is serving as the event’s main sponsor.
The firm reached out to USF Sarasota-Manatee to provide a venue and help organize the event. Radio personality Maverick Johnson of 92.1 WCTQ and founder/president of the Denis V. Cooper Foundation – Wishes for Heroes will serve as master of ceremonies.
Also sponsoring the event are: attorney David Haenel of The Law Place, Lair Services Inc., David Taylor Photography, Windy City Apparel, accounting firm Mauldin & Jenkins and Gold Coast Eagle Distributing.
