The Pasco-Hernando State College (PHSC) Foundation will participate in Giving Tuesday on November 29, 2016 with a goal of raising $3,000 to support low-income students with disabilities. The campaign will bring awareness and funds to the Office of Disabilities Services (ODS) in order to provide economically disadvantaged students with psychoeducational testing and provide educational accommodations.
Giving Tuesday, an annual event celebrated on the Tuesday following Black Friday and Cyber Monday, is a global movement to encourage citizens to come together and give back to the causes they care about. Using the hashtag #GivingTuesday, the campaign encourages people to celebrate their giving through social media channels. PHSC is encouraging community members to participate in Giving Tuesday by giving, volunteering, participating in their Run, Walk and Roll 5K, or by helping spread the word. The goal is to help at least 10 students get testing by raising $3,000.
The ODS can provide accommodations to students with a documented disability, however, the testing needed for documentation can be expensive and out of reach for students without the financial means. These students therefore struggle in their classes and often get frustrated and drop out, leading to diminished job prospects. Students who receive disabilities accommodations, however, have higher retention and graduation rates, and higher GPAs than the greater student population. Nearly 400 PHSC students currently receive accommodation, which include sign language interpreters, tutors, use of calculators or recording devices, large print materials, extra time for testing, course work adaptations and others.
