Detert, Moran are sworn in; Hines begins second term on commission
|SARASOTA COUNTY – The Board of County Commissioners welcomed two new members Tuesday morning as Nancy Detert and Michael Moran officially began their terms.|
The newly elected commissioners were sworn in by Judge Thomas Krug of the 12th Judicial Circuit Court in front of a standing-room-only crowd at the county commission chambers. Commissioner Charles Hines, who was re-elected for a second term, also took the oath before joining his new colleagues on the dais for their first meeting.
“Congratulations. Now you don’t get to go home, you get to sit with us for the next six, seven hours,” joked Commission Chairman Alan Maio.
Detert takes over the District 3 seat previously held by Christine Robinson. After spending the past 16 years working in Tallahassee, serving in both the Florida House of Representatives and the Florida Senate, Detert will be working closer to her home in Venice.
“I hope you’ll never be disappointed in me,” Detert said. “I’m very thrilled to be working at home, and I’m trying to blend.”
Moran assumes the District 1 seat that Carolyn Mason held for the past eight years. He thanked Mason, who was in attendance Tuesday along with fellow former commissioners Robinson, Nora Patterson and Jon Thaxton, for her distinguished service.
“While I’m replacing her and her administrative duty for the county, there’s no way I could replace her iconic leadership for the community,” Moran said.
Hines said he looks forward to continuing to serve the community and take Sarasota County to “the next level.”
“We have so many great things ahead of us,” Hines said. “It’s a wonderful place to live. We win award after award for being a great place. It’s so exciting.”
