St. Petersburg, Florida: Social Women in Motion (SWIM) is pleased to announce the transition from a Women’s Social group into an organization whose mission will also include Personal and Professional Development support for Women-Owned Businesses, and Charitable Fundraising. With over 1300 followers in THE greater Tampa/St. Petersburg area, maximizing that synergy for the greater good led to the change.
In celebration of the re-launch, SWIM held a Sunday Rooftop Event at Station House in St. Petersburg and raised $300 for Tampa Crossroads. “Recent statistics show that there are 1.4 million homeless veterans and out of those veterans 9% are women veterans, which is an increase from the 2010 census. Being homeless could be a result from several things: environmental issues, displacement, job transition from military to civilian life or effects from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and military sexual trauma (MST). That is why we chose Tampa Crossroads Women Shelter,” says SWIM Founder Carla Douglass, a veteran who served over 20 years.
Carla Corley, President of SWIM includes “In addition to our monthly events which will highlight educational or motivational speakers, private tours or receptions or after-hour events at local business venues, each quarter we will have a large fundraiser to raise money for a specific charity. That collective power allows us not only to raise awareness, but also financially impact four charities a year. We like to sum it up simply as the women of SWIM are committed to Investing in Ourselves, Each Other and in Our Community.”
