SARASOTA/BRADENTON, FL – Goodwill Manasota has partnered with CARES Outreach and members of the local community to raise awareness in the weeks leading up to World AIDS Day 2016. From November 15 through December 6, Goodwill will display an educational art show at six of its locations in Sarasota and Manatee counties.
The community rooms at Goodwill Manasota are available for the local community to meet and learn through educational, cultural and fun activities; this is the first time that Goodwill is hosting an ongoing educational art show. The displays will feature educational and prevention messages about how HIV is spread, the continued impact of HIV, and the responsibility that each of us has to achieve the goal of “no new infections.”
The highlight of this event will be the cut-outs of traced hands on red paper – available at participating organizations – that will be assembled into the pattern of the red AIDS ribbon and displayed at that location. Some of the hands will have a message, a word or phrase, or the first name of the “artist.” Red hands will also be available at each location for visitors to honor the memory of someone who has died or a loved one living with HIV/AIDS. These will join the others on the wall display.
“Today’s youth will find the cures of today’s illnesses tomorrow,” said Michel Kehoe, founder and CEO of CARES Outreach Sarasota. “I think about the generations to come and I believe they will make the world a better place – a world free of HIV/AIDS by 2030.”
As in the past, it will be the children who will educate the community about the need to fight stigma and discrimination, embrace societal diversity, and to care for those around us. Art can be an innovative tool when incorporated into a larger public health communication effort.
Each participating organization will receive age-appropriate, culturally sensitive HIV educational materials. These organizations include Sarasota School of Arts and Sciences, Children First, Girls, Inc., Cub Scout Pack 23, Fashion Focus Hair Academy, Parents in Action, and the youth programs of the Robert L. Taylor Community Center: Boys and Girls Doing the Right Thing and Hard NOC.
Corporate sponsors for this year’s event include Hedges Health Mart Pharmacy, AFC Family Care/Urgent Care, Z-Edge Tattoo, New College of Florida, and local band Summer Survivors.
