Southwest FL – Our October luncheon was thought provoking and informative. Ashley Moore, the senior public affairs coordinator for the LifeLink Foundation, started by explaining the role that LifeLink plays in facilitating the organ transplantation process. In the U.S. over 100,000 people are waiting for organ transplants and an average of 22 people die each day for lack of a functioning organ.
She explained that organs and tissue could only be harvested from a donor who passes away while on a ventilator, because organs and tissue not constantly supplied with oxygen quickly become unusable. Ashley dispelled several harmful myths about organ donation. There is no age limit for donors, and technological advancements have allowed doctors to harvest organs, bones and even skin. The doctors also take great care to not disfigure the bodies they use to save lives; being a donor would not prevent someone from having an open casket funeral.
Fellow MOAA member Willie Oler then took the stage and shared his personal experience. Six years ago, after suffering from a rare and serious disease called Amyloidosis, Willie required a new heart and liver. After many doctor visits and months in the hospital, a donor’s kindness and the hard work of the transplant doctors gave him a new lease on life. He closed with, “If you are an organ donor, thank you, if you are not please consider becoming one.”
Ashley Moore is a University of Florida graduate and serves as the secretary on the Donate Life Florida Board of Directors. Willie Oler, Ed.D, earned his doctorate in education from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, FL and holds two master’s degrees. The owner of The Oler Group, a higher-education management firm in Sarasota, Dr. Oler is a Vietnam veteran, retiring from the U.S. Marine Corps as a lieutenant colonel.
