Sarasota Musica Viva presents “A Festive Holiday Concert” with special guest artist and Boston Symphony Orchestra harpsichordist, Mark Kroll with Betsy Hudson Traba and Linda Bento-Rei, flutes on Monday, December 5th at 7:00 PM at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 1031 S Euclid Ave, Sarasota, FL 34237.
The program will include rarely heard pieces for flute and harpsichord and two flutes, in addition to some favorites including the C.P.E. Bach (1714-1788), Hamburger Sonata in G Major for flute, cello and harpsichord, Elegia y Joropo for flute and harpsichord written by Venezuelan composer, Nicolas Real (b.1969) and Robert Starer’s (1924-2001), Yizkor and Anima Aeterna, also for flute and harpsichord which is a hauntingly beautiful piece, each movement evocative of its title: the first in memory of the departed, the second in hopeful joy for the eternal soul.
Dialogo Angelico by Goffredo Petrassi (1904-2003) written for two flutes will be performed behind a screen or at the back of the hall as indicated by the composer so that the audience will not be visually distracted and will become engulfed by the many resultant tones depicting the dialogue of the angels. The program will conclude with the J.S. Bach (1685-1750), Trio Sonata in G Major written for two flutes, cello and harpsichord. This work reflects one of Bach’s happiest moods, with brilliant and idiomatic writing for both instruments. No wonder that he used the same music for the sonata for viola da gamba and harpsichord as well as arranged and performed by other instruments.
The concert will take place in the Chapel and admission is free with an encouraged good will offering. Sarasota Musica Viva is a fully non-profit organization dedicated to presenting constantly evolving chamber music repertoire, performed by virtuosic musicians who play with incredible passion and precision. Our mission is to expand, enrich and engage our audiences by presenting new and rarely performed masterpieces that otherwise might not be heard. Our 2016-2017 season will present challenging new music along with some fresh arrangements of traditional chamber music works.
