SARASOTA, Fla. (Oct. 19, 2016) – The Education Foundation of Sarasota County will present our community’s first GradNation Summit Oct. 21 at Suncoast Technical College. In partnership with AT&T and America’s Promise Alliance, the nation’s largest partnership to improve lives of children and youth, the summit will bring together educators, nonprofits, parents and students to discuss ways to improve the high school graduation rate and better prepare students for college.
Sarasota County is among 100 communities across the nation — and one of four in Florida — selected to host a GradNation Community Summit. According to the Florida Department of Education, Sarasota County’s graduation rate is 79.2 percent — just under the national graduation rate of 83 percent, which is a new record. A goal of the summit is to hear directly from students about the issues and challenges that cause their peers to drop out, and discuss ways to get all students to graduation day. Throughout the day, participants will identify gaps in access to college resources and develop plans to address these gaps.
“As part of national College Knowledge Month, the Education Foundation of Sarasota County is excited to bring the GradNation Summit to Sarasota to help students prepare for success in high school, college and beyond,” said Jennifer Vigne, president of the Education Foundation of Sarasota County. “We want to work with our community to address the issues that cause students to dropout while introducing students to opportunities available post graduation – opportunities that exist only if they graduate.”
GradNation Community Summits are part of America’s Promise Alliance’s GradNation campaign. The goal of the campaign is to achieve a 90 percent nationwide rate by 2020, with no school graduating fewer than 80 percent of its students on time.
