SANCA AND USA PENTATHLON HOST UIPM’S BIATHLE TRIATHLE COMPETITION CONTEST TO TAKE PLACE AT NATHAN BENDERSON PARK OCTOBER 21-23
Sarasota, FL (October 10) More than 800 athletes from up to 40 nations, including a South African delegation of over 250 will be traveling to the Sarasota-Bradenton area for the Union International of Pentathlon Modern (UIPM) Biathle and Triathle World Championships. The event, which will be held at Nathan Benderson Park October 21-23, marks the 18th championship, and the first one ever hosted in the United States.
Originally created as a development sport for the modern pentathlon, the Biathle/Triathle differs from other events in that it is an age group competition broken into three divisions: an elite division for the world’s best, an open division for the competitive level athlete and a recreational division; which welcomes anyone who wants to compete at his or her own pace. Among the many athletes expected to compete are the defending men’s and women’s world champions, recent Olympians and the world record holder of the modern pentathlon swim, Logan Storie, from the University of Florida.
According to Rob Stull, president of USA Pentathlon, what makes this event so special is the broad base it appeals to. “Regardless of athletic prowess or age, anyone can participate. The parameters make it something that any level athlete can enjoy and be proud of his or her accomplishment,” he said.
Biathle is a run-swim-run continuous race which will take place at Nathan Benderson Park. The competition distances are age related with the shortest distance being a 400-meter total run combined with a 50-meter swim. The longest distance is a 3,200-meter total run with a 200-meter swim.
Triathle is a continuous race consisting of laser pistol shooting, swimming, and running. The athletes will shoot at five targets with a laser pistol provided by the organizers, swim between 25 meters and 50 meters in each lap based on their age and run between 200 meters and 800 meters per lap based on their age group. The senior division, for example, will shoot at a total of 20 targets, swim a total of 200 meters, and run a total of 3,200 meters.
Event Schedule includes: October 21 – Biathle Mixed Relay and Triathle Mixed Relay; October 22 – Triathle Individual; October 23 – Biathle Individual. Prior to the event, laser pistols will be available to local competitors for practice. USA Pentathlon will be conducting training clinics prior to the competition.
“We are eager to host these world class athletes from across the globe at Nathan Benderson Park,” said Robert J. Sullivan, president and CEO of SANCA. Sullivan also noted that athletes are encouraged to explore Sarasota and Manatee counties, visiting the wide variety of attractions that have made this destination so special. “We are fortunate to have such an incredible facility here in Sarasota that allows us to attract international events to Nathan Benderson Park.”
Last year’s Biathle/ Triathle event was held in Batumi, Republic of Georgia and before that it was in Guatemala. Other notable locations for the event include France, Cypress, Great Britain, and Korea.
