Southwest FL – In addition to its own chapter members, the recent MOAS luncheon had members from the Bradenton, Venice, Lee Coast and Sebring Chapters of MOAA, and members of the Sarasota Manatee Veterans Task Force in attendance.
LTC Marc Oliveri, President of Florida Council of Chapters (FCOC) of MOAA provided an update of MOAA activities and priorities. He informed us of the vital lobbying that MOAA conducts in support of active duty military, veterans, and their families. He described the “Widows Tax” and how the current law prevents many surviving spouses from receiving their full benefits.
A detailed explanation of the Widow’s tax and information on MOAA’s lobbying for a solution are available at: http://www.moaa.org/Content/Take-Action/TopIssues/Retirees/Eliminating-the-Widows–Tax.aspx.
The President and CEO of Goodwill Manasota, Bob Rosinsky, then took the stage and spoke about the Goodwill Veterans Task Force, a group of community leaders dedicated to helping local veterans. He explained how they leverage Goodwill’s two greatest skills, putting people to work and case management; ensuring that veterans get all the assistance they require and are entitled to. Bob closed with the example of a local veteran who has benefited immensely from the program.
This veteran first approached Goodwill as a homeless addict. After much hard work and support from the task force and the community, he is now sober, employed and living independently. Bob thanked all present for helping support both Goodwill and their Veteran’s initiative.
There is much interest in the possibility of expanding the local partnership of Manasota Goodwill and the Sarasota MOAA chapter to other Goodwill organizations and MOAA chapters in Florida, and there are currently plans to explore this possibility – between FCOC and Goodwill – at the upcoming January 2017 FCOC Leadership Conference in Orlando
