With more than 20 million records sold worldwide, including “Up, Up, and Away,” “One Less Bell to Answer,” “Wedding Bell Blues,” “Stoned Soul Picnic” and the iconic “Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In,” The 5th Dimension (coming to The Mahaffey Friday, Jan. 6 at 8 p.m.) brought magical harmonies to the forefront, seamlessly blended pop and R&B and created musical a legacy that continues to shine and inspire. Guitarist Jim McCarty, a founding member of the great British rock and blues band The Yardbirds, brings the current incarnation of the group to The Palladium Theater Saturday, March 5 at 8 p.m. The band (“Shapes of Things,” “Heart Full of Soul,” “For Your Love”) famously kickstarted the careers of Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. Sharing the bill will be Vanilla Fudge (“You Keep Me Hangin’ On”), one of the “heaviest” rock bands of the late 1960s, featuring three founding members: Mark Stein (vocals/keyboards), Vince Martell (guitar/vocals) and drummer Carmine Appice. Tickets are $30, $45 and $50.
The Palladium goes twisting into the 21st Century when Chubby Checker arrives Thursday, March 23 at 7:30 p.m. with his band, the Wildcats. Checker’s seminal recording of “The Twist” climbed to No. 1 on two separate occasions (in 1960 and again in ’62). “The Twist” spawned a massive dance craze and thrust Chubby Checker into the national spotlight. Tickets are $39.50 and $49.50.
Tickets for all three shows go on sale Saturday, Oct. 1 at 10 a.m. Bill Edwards Foundation for the Arts members can purchase tickets starting today at noon. The Mahaffey Box Office is open 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Saturday or at least 90 minutes prior to any ticketed event. There are no added charges ever on tickets purchased directly from The Mahaffey Theater.
