Sept. 21, 2016 (Tampa, Fla.) — Susan Scherer, a certified oncology nurse and Tampa business owner, visited Washington, D.C. last week to advocate for the rights of cancer patients.
Scherer, founder and CEO of RN Cancer Guides Solutions, was part of an exclusive meeting at the White House with the Cancer Moonshot Initiative Taskforce. Vice President Biden spoke with Scherer along with other Oncology Nursing Society members. She also visited the legislative offices of Rep. Gus Bilirakis, Sen. Marco Rubio, and Sen. Bill Nelson.
The visit was part of 2016 ONS Capitol Hill Advocacy Days Conference, an invitation-only event held Sept. 14-15. There were speakers and presentations from the nation’s top oncology nurses regarding the federal government’s decision-making process, the impact of activism, and the role of the oncology nurse in educating our nation’s leaders. A focus was on the importance of passing the Palliative Care and Hospice Education and Training Act (H.R. 3119) and the 21st Century Cures Act (H.R. 6).
This election cycle serves as an important time in history, and Scherer’s voice as an oncology nurse is proving essential in advocating for patients and making improvements in healthcare.
“It’s critical for us to give lawmakers a boots-on-the-ground perspective for navigating patients through cancer care,” said Scherer, who serves individual patients as well as corporate clients through employee healthcare programs for improving cancer care
Scherer’s medical career spans over 25 years, including work in trauma, diagnostic coding, surgical intensive care units, neurological oncology, endocrine cancer and disorders, and oncological emergency medicine prior to launching RN Cancer Guides Solutions.
