BRADENTON, Fla. — Sports medicine specialist and orthopedic surgeon Dr. Daniel Lamar with Coastal Orthopedics Sports Medicine & Pain Management (CoastalOrthopedics.com) was recently hired as lead orthopedic consultant for the Tennessee Titans, based in Nashville, Tenn.
In his new role, Dr. Lamar will attend Titans games, the team’s training camp, the National Football League’s (NFL) Scouting Combine and the NFL Draft to help review potential players physically.
Dr. Lamar previously worked with the Titans’ current director of sports medicine, Todd Toriscelli, when Toriscelli was the head athletic trainer and later the director of sports medicine and performance for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Dr. Lamar served as an orthopedic surgeon for the Buccaneers for 10 years.
“Dr. Lamar is at the top of his field,” Toriscelli said. “He’s a special, gifted orthopedist. I thought we could really use his expertise. He’s going to be a great part of what we do here.”
Dr. Lamar’s work with the Titans has allowed him to reconnect with Toriscelli, who along with his Buccaneers staff received the prestigious Athletic Training Staff of the Year award for the 2012 season. The annual award is voted on by all NFL trainers and was presented at the prestigious Ed Block Courage Awards ceremony. During his time with the Buccaneers, Toriscelli also mentored eight trainers who went on to become head athletic trainers at the college and NFL levels.
“Toriscelli is widely considered one of the best trainers in the NFL,” Dr. Lamar said. “As an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine, NFL injury management is the pinnacle of the profession in my opinion, and I really enjoy having the chance to work with people who are at the top of their industry.”
Dr. Lamar was a wide receiver and kickoff returner for Manatee High School and Davidson College. He served as team captain for both schools.
“From my perspective, there’s nothing quite like football – the variety and complexity of the injuries make it challenging,” Dr. Lamar said. “I’ve been connected to football my whole life and love the game.”
Dr. Lamar is also a sports medicine physician for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Baltimore Orioles, U.S. Soccer Team, IMG Academy, Manatee High School and several other local high schools.
“He’s got elite surgical skills, and he played football, so he understands the game and can relate to the players,” Toriscelli said. “If you can’t gain the trust of players, you can’t do this job. I would say that’s his biggest gift.”
