Odessa, FL (September 20, 2016)– In January, Old McMicky’s Farm (OMF) announced the winners of the 3rd “Mission I Do” $30k Dream Wedding Giveaway. The Farm received dozens of entries from local deserving military couples and narrowed the submissions to 4 admirable couples. In November, voting was opened to the public and over 65,000 votes were received. Although Byron and Shaina were not the grand prize winners, Old McMicky’s Farm felt that each of the four finalist couples had such moving and deserving stories that they provided free weddings to each of the runner-up couples as well.
Byron and Shaina have been together for 7 years. They met online. When Byron came back from serving in Iraq, he started working at a school as a teachers’ aid – helping the kids that couldn’t make it in regular high school. “That attracted me to go ahead and have a date with him. He teaches those kids discipline and teaches them life goals’, says Shaina. “Since he never graduated from high school he was driven to help them out; that is what attracted me.” she continues. Shaina says that she loves a man in uniform and her personal background participating in JROTC in high school drew them closer – the love for our country and each other. Shaina graduated from UCF in 2011 with a degree in communications now she is a DJ. Byron graduated last year specializing in video game production. Her birthday is on Christmas day and while they opened the presents under the tree with their family all around, he got on one knee and popped the question. “I was in complete shock. With all that we gone through together and endless nights with Byron suffering from PTSD he was ready to take me as his wife! I said YES!”
The Mission I Do Dream Wedding program was created by OMF in 2013 with a mission to provide one active duty Military or veteran, residing or stationed in the Tampa Bay Area, the wedding of their dreams at the breathtaking, lakeside location of The Barn at Crescent Lake at Old McMicky’s Farm. Once the mission spread, local businesses began to pitch in and provide additional products and services to support the effort. Items like, the wedding rings, the wedding dress and tuxedo, catering, photography and more. Since its inception, the Farm has helped to provide over $140,000 in products and services to 5 very deserving military couples.
2016 was a record breaking year and the farm was able to provide a total of 3 weddings. In February, Sam and Chris who were the grand prize $30,000 winners were married at the farm. Their story gained national media attention and the couple was featured in People Magazine and was flown to New York City to be featured on Fox and Friends National TV morning show. Timothy an Anh were married in April and received local attention and support. The groom and his groomsmen (all wounded in combat) were even given an honor ride bachelor party where south Tampa businesses and patrons thanked the veterans as they passed down Howard Ave. on a Saturday evening. It was an amazing wedding with the groom and groomsmen all in their dress blue Marine uniforms. A llocal Marine Honor Guard provided a sword arch ceremony for the couple as well. (Picture attached).
