SARASOTA/BRADENTON, FL – The first-ever Art Center Sarasota “iconcept jr” runway event on September 25 will feature outfits and accessories created by artists and designers, ages 8-18, from unconventional materials. Goodwill Manasota is participating in the fashion show by providing gift certificates that the youth artists and designers can use to purchase materials to help inspire and fabricate their creations.
According to Lisa Berger, the founder of the original “iconcept” runway event – which is celebrating its ninth year as one of the region’s most distinctive fundraisers – iconcept jr was developed to challenge and develop emerging artists and designers. Berger says some of these young people attended classes at the Art Center during the summer, learning how to create wearable fashions and accessories using materials other than fabric. The students worked directly with iconcept artists to learn, first-hand, the intricacies of fashion design, construction, creative thinking, and problem-solving.
“We’re amazed by what these young rebels of the runway created for the inaugural event,” says Berger. “We’re also honored to be a vital part of inspiring their young minds to be at their creative best.”
For Goodwill Manasota, the program is particularly appealing as it aligns with its “reduce, reuse, recycle” mindset. Items that have been donated to Goodwill will help to spur the creative process for these talented youths.
“Goodwill Manasota is pleased to work with community organizations such as Art Center Sarasota, Girls Inc., and the Boys & Girls Clubs, who are all working to challenge and inspire emerging artists and designers through the iconcept jr fashion show,” said Veronica Brandon Miller, vice president of Goodwill Manasota. “These young people exemplify our Goodwill supporters, shoppers and donors – they see the value of giving unwanted items new life, protecting the environment, and helping to lift up others, all while developing confidence in their own ability to change lives. We are proud to partner with Art Center Sarasota to inspire creativity and encourage environmental stewardship from a young age.”
The iconcept jr event takes place on Sunday, September 25, noon to 2 p.m., at Art Center Sarasota (707 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota). General admission tickets, which include a buffet lunch, are $50/adults, $25/ages 17 and under. VIP tickets are $75 and include a seat along the runway. Proceeds from ticket sales help benefit Art Center Sarasota’s youth scholarships and education outreach programs. To purchase tickets, visit www.artsarasota.org/iconceptjr or call (941) 365-2032.
