St. Petersburg, FL (September 8, 2016) – Shadow Serenity is a non-profit organization located in Pinellas County that offers free equine therapy for those in need. Founded on the proven philosophy that taking care of animals and being in the company of animals is healing and good for the human spirit, their mission is to offer the therapeutic power of horsemanship to any person in Pinellas or Hillsborough County who may need it. Shadow Serenity currently has four “equine therapists” ranging in size from the “gentle giant”, Yaeger, who is a retired Thoroughbred racehorse, to the Miniature Palomino, Gigi, who is an ambassador of Project PUP (Pets Uplifting People).
Founded in 2014 by Debbie Newman and Jamie Kay-Weil, the organization came to be after Newman discovered how incredibly healing her horse, Shadow, was in helping her face the difficult diagnosis of Stage 3 Ovarian Cancer. Caring for her horse gave Newman a reason to get out of bed each day and brought joy throughout her painful disease. Shadow’s love and comfort is what Newman needed to make it through the chemo treatments and radiation. With this in mind, Newman teamed up with expert horse trainer Kay-Weil to open Shadow Serenity so that others could experience the peace that equine therapy brought to her life.
Says Kay-Weil, “When I saw how much Shadow was helping Debbie deal with her cancer, I knew that this was something that others who were hurting could benefit from as well. The way the horses connect with people and are so gentle with the sick, it is like they feel what they are going through and just intuitively want to help. It is remarkable.”
Shadow Serenity offers free weekly classes for participants and one family member. Classes are 1 ½ hours, during which participants build a bond with one horse and learn horsemanship skills. Through this therapy, participants develop a bond with the horse and the responsibility of being their caregiver. The compassion and companionship provided by the horse, coupled with the responsibility and sense of accomplishment from caring for the horse improves their physical, mental, social, and emotional well-being during whatever difficulties they are experiencing. Participants develop an understanding of horses and how they communicate their thoughts and emotions, giving them a valuable connection to animals and nature. Science supports that a connection to nature brings personal healing and is emotionally beneficial.
Along with the emotional benefits of equine therapy, Shadow Serenity sessions give participants the physical improvements of increased muscle strength, coordination, balance, endurance, and respiratory control. This emotional, spiritual and physical benefits of working with the horses helps participants gain insight as it relates to emotions, communication, relationships, personal healing and inner strength. The comfort and solace to individuals fighting cancer, suffering from a medical condition, or simply needing to be in the presence of the spiritual magic that is the horse, is the power of Shadow Serenity and their fantastic team of trainers, volunteers, and horses. The therapy horses also travel to provide healing visits to a wide range of facilities like VA hospitals, nursing homes, and cancer centers.
