SARASOTA, Fla. (Aug. 26, 2016) USF Sarasota-Manatee mathematics instructor Dr. Joy D’Andrea has been invited to Florida Southern College in Lakeland next month to present a paper regarding her research involving polyhedrons – three-dimensional geometric shapes.
“It’s a new theorem,” Dr. D’Andrea said, adding that essentially she developed a new method for classifying polyhedrons. Her research builds on theories by Swiss mathematician and physicist Leonhard Euler and could someday lead to advances in chemistry, in particular how drugs are delivered to human cells.
Before she publishes her work, D’Andrea wants to seek input from other mathematicians about her research, which is one reason she accepted the invitation to discuss her findings at Florida Southern College. She’ll present her study Sept. 7.
This isn’t the first time, Dr. D’Andrea has presented a paper at Florida Southern. She was there in February to talk about a study she developed with a colleague for tracking and calculating hurricanes.
Alum earns promotion thanks to USFSM program
Kudos to USFSM alumna Olivia Norsworthy, who was recently promoted by her employer, Skanska USA Building.
Norsworthy earned a degree in professional and technical communication in 2015, which helped land her a position writing items for the employee news section of the company’s in-house website.
The job capitalizes on Norsworthy’s writing and computer design skills learned at USFSM, which was one reason she earned the promotion. “I’ve been doing this for a few weeks now and it’s a lot of fun,” she said.
After years working as an administrative assistant, her new title is technical librarian. She hopes to continue to grow with the company.
“It’s wonderful to be able to do something you’re passionate about and work for a company you care about,” she said.
MBA alumni event set
Graduates of USFSM’s Masters of Business Administration program are invited to an all-alumni mixer scheduled Thursday, Sept. 8, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Gold Coast Eagle Distributing, 7051 Wilderness Lane, Sarasota.
The event, hosted by USFSM’s College of Business MBA Alumni Society, is expected to draw dozens of longtime and recent alumni who attended USFSM’s MBA program. As students, they attended Saturday classes for two years to earn their advanced degrees.
“This is a very close group. They have a really strong bond with each other,” said Jay Riley, director of Alumni Affairs. “The atmosphere is very comfortable and the meeting room is beautiful. It’s the perfect place for social gatherings with our MBA alumni.”
USFSM’s College of Business MBA Alumni Society was formed three years ago to engage alumni committed to building lasting connections, supporting students and its College of Business.

USFSM to unveil $1.6 million Student Commons
USF Sarasota-Manatee is set to officially unveil its $1.6 million Student Commons with a ribbon-cutting noon to 2 p.m. Monday.
The project, to create a more open and inviting space, started in May with workers razing the former Student Commons lounge, fitness room and Student Government offices.
Three months later, the result is a larger fitness area, office space and lounge that flow into Jonathan’s Café at the campus’ north end. Workers installed glass walls in some places and opened up others to create a more accessible student-centric area.
The project, approved last year by Student Government and USFSM’s senior leadership, was funded by Capital Improvement Trust Funds and Student Activity and Services Fees collected over several years. The 6,900-square-foot space unofficially opened the first day of the fall semester, Aug. 22.
