Sarasota County to celebrate grand opening of new BMX track

August 23, 2016 by Press Release

SARASOTA COUNTY – The community is invited to the grand opening celebration of the BMX track at the Sarasota County Youth Athletic Complex at 10 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 27.

This free, family friendly celebration will feature an opening ceremony, ribbon cutting, BMX demonstrations, refreshments and other fun activities to mark the completion of Sarasota County’s $2.4 million renovation project.

This project was aimed at improving one of Sarasota County’s most valued sports facilities, by enhancing or rebuilding many of the park’s amenities, including: reconfiguration of the track, new 5-and 8-meter starting hills, new start gate system, upgraded site lighting and drainage, and new landscaping.

“This project reinforces Sarasota County’s growing reputation as a sports destination, and we look forward to continually welcoming competitors from around the nation, and the world,” said County Administrator Tom Harmer. “Multiple county departments and community partners worked diligently to bring this project to completion, and we’re honored to share this renovated facility with everyone.”

The original BMX track was built in 1974, and has positively impacted generations of Sarasota County kids and families, in addition to many visitors. The facility has welcomed national and international competitions, and is maintained by a volunteer parents group whose kids’ lives have been transformed by the spirit of BMX competition.

“These improvements further promote the quality of life here in Sarasota County, which is one of our organizational goals,” said Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Director Carolyn Brown. “BMX has been a part of the community for over 40 years, and this newly designed track will ensure that future generations will continue to enjoy this exciting sport.”

The event starts promptly at 10 a.m., at 1590 North Tuttle Ave. Parking will be available at several locations within the Youth Athletic Complex, including the Cal Ripken baseball park and Ed Smith Stadium.
