SARASOTA, Fla. (Aug. 12, 2016) Eleven Taiwanese students attending classes this fall at USF Sarasota-Manatee will be treated to a reception by faculty and staff next week.
The students, who arrived last month from universities in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, are pursuing certificates in international hospitality management. They’ll be treated to a reception 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at USFSM’s Culinary Innovation Lab, 8130 Main St., in Lakewood Ranch.
In addition to their classes at USFSM’s College of Hospitality & Tourism Leadership, the students will intern at local hotels and restaurants this spring to gain practical experience. After receiving their certificates, they’ll return to Taiwan to finish their senior year and graduate.
For many of the students, this period of study represents their first time in the United States. The International Certificate Program began in 2013 as a way to broaden USFSM’s ties internationally. Since then, 40 Taiwanese students have gone through the program.
In collaboration with the College of Hospitality & Tourism Leadership, the Global Engagement Office coordinates the certificate program and works closely with university partners to ensure a positive experience for the students.
