The Florida HMF Ghostriders adult roller hockey tribute team achieved success both on and off the rink at SportsONE/Parkview Icehouse in Fort Wayne IN, Aug. 4-7, 2016, competing in the State Wars 12 United States Roller Hockey Championships.
Composed of elite young adult roller hockey players selected from Tampa, Orlando, and other cities around the state, the HMF Ghostriders players pay tribute to all Hockey Moms through their play as they help raise awareness and donations to support the Hockey Mom Foundation and its missions.
The Florida HMF Ghostriders competed in the Adults Senior A division at the State Wars 12 tournament, going undefeated during round robin play at 3-0-1 and 6th seed in the 38-team field from the U.S. and U.K. going into playoffs.
After thrilling OT wins in the playoffs over Michigan and Tennessee, the Florida HMF Ghostriders fell to Missouri in Semifinals, ending the tournament in 4th place and a 5-1-1 overall record. They defeated teams from OH, MI, PA, MO and TN during the preliminary and playoff rounds and tied 3-3 with IL.
Hockey Mom Foundation Director Brian Craven of Eustis sponsored the Florida HMF Ghostriders in honor of his wife and Hockey Mom Pam, who died in August 2015 from pneumonia and complications after an 8-year battle with a rare form of ovarian cancer. She had been Team Florida’s Team Mom since the second State Wars, and only missed a few when she was battling her illness.
The HMF Ghostriders players dedicated their effort to Pam’s memory, since most of them had known her for years as their team Hockey Mom. The players surprised Coach Craven with a special plaque in Pam’s honor before taking the rink and beating Michigan in a thrilling 3-2 OT playoff game.
The largest roller hockey event of the year, State Wars United States Roller Hockey Championships now draws teams from around the world. The 2016 edition at the three-rink Parkview Icehouse in Fort Wayne included 274 teams from the U.S., Canada and the United Kingdom with player divisions ranging from ages 6 to 45 and over. As many as 10,000 people attended the July 27-Aug. 7 event, with Florida entering teams in 8 divisions including the HMF Ghostriders in Senior A.
State Wars has been a generous supporter of the Hockey Mom Foundation since its inception last October. All divisions of State Wars players wore the Hockey Mom Foundation logo on their left jersey sleeve, and State Wars provided a prime space for the Hockey Mom Foundation booth where Love Your Hockey Mom™ t-shirts, helmet decals, bracelets, car magnets, and a commemorative Florida trading pin in Pam Craven’s honor were offered for donations. Proceeds from the Love Your Hockey Mom™ items provided through the Craven Family Fund will be used to fund the missions of the Hockey Mom Foundation.
About Hockey Mom Foundation
The Hockey Mom Foundation is an all volunteer organization that honors Hockey Moms everywhere by raising funds to make one-time foundational grants towards non-profit causes focused on helping hockey players reach their educational goals, furthering cancer research, and the care of cancer patients. The Hockey Mom Foundation brings hope through its ongoing awareness campaigns. By traveling to hockey rinks across the nation with booths and the HMF Ghostriders tribute team, we hear and share courageous stories of many Hockey Moms who face life-threatening cancers.
