Luncheon set for Brothers and Sisters
Brothers and Sisters Doing the Right Thing, a nonprofit based at the Robert Taylor community center in Sarasota, was the guest of honor at a luncheon Friday hosted by USF Sarasota-Manatee.
The group, comprised of 10 youths ages 13 to 16, was feted at the USFSM Culinary Innovation Lab in Lakewood Ranch after a six-week program that had the teens learning about college and career options.
“This is very important for these teens,” said Executive Director Alice Faye Jones. “It’s important for them because what they do in high school matters when they start looking at colleges.”
Since June 14, the teens have stopped by the main campus weekly to hear how college degrees can impact their lives. In addition to meeting USFSM admissions and career services representatives, they heard from Drs. Donna Polelle, Sarah Hegyi, Fawn Ngo, Valerie Lipscomb, Kathy Black, Carlos Jimenez and Marie Byrd.
The program involving the teens started after a conversation this past spring between the community center and Dr. Sandra Stone, regional chancellor at USFSM.
The center was seeking volunteer tutors and the idea evolved to bring students onto the campus to learn about college and career choices, said Dr. Lora Kosten, director of USFSM’s Office of Community Engagement.
“In addition to hearing about college and careers, the students learned about leadership, developing confidence and the importance of effective communication,” she said. “These skills are necessary for success in life and in our careers – any career.”
