Thinking about buying a house because it’s a REALLY good deal (mainly because it has an amazing view), but it’s not your style?! Not to worry…you can make it exactly what you want on the inside, while still complimenting the architecture! Many people have houses where the exterior design would imply a certain interior style, but when you go into the home, it’s completely different than you expected! This is actually a good thing! Here’s what I’m talking about…there are a lot of photos and vision boards online of Spanish style homes with very modern interiors, and everyone always drools over them (myself included), right?! And…I keep seeing traditional colonial style homes from the northeast with modern “boxes” hanging off the side for an addition, and I LOVE it! (All you Dwell readers know what I’m talking about!) So…no matter what it looks like, you can make it your own (especially if the Price is Right, Bob!)…J
We are currently working on a project in which we are doing exactly what I’m describing above. Outside is ultra contemporary…you know, flat roof, white exterior, blue-”ish” windows…you get the point. However, we are designing the inside to look like a beach cottage (not a cheesy one…I know your mind went to grandma’s house with all the sea shells). Don’t worry, it will look amazing! Well…what’s the secret? Mixing styles! Here’s an example – since the exterior is so contemporary, we are staying with the theme by picking a white sofa with a contemporary shape to the arm…but, it is a slip cover sofa to give it that cottage feel. And…we are adding accent pillows with teals, blues, and greens (yes…the colors of the water, to compliment the view, of course!) which warms it up with that beachy chic look. There you have it…Buy it for the view and make it your own!!
This isn’t the project…but it’s a great example of what I’m talking about!
