SARASOTA, Fla. (June 21, 2016) – Dozens of USF Sarasota-Manatee students are set to hit the road this week as part of an informational tour about career options at Manatee County.
The event dubbed “County Career Connections” is set Thursday and follows a similar event last summer where business majors visited several Sarasota-based employers.
The students are set to meet at USFSM’s campus in the morning before heading on a bus to Manatee County’s administrative offices in downtown Bradenton.
Once at the offices, they’ll receive an orientation about the various levels of government, department functions and career and internship opportunities there. They’ll also tour the offices behind the scenes and get an opportunity to mingle with administrators, department heads and other employees.
After a lunch, they’ll head to the judicial center, also in downtown, to meet with 12th Judicial Circuit Court Judge Gilbert Smith Jr., a USF alum; Manatee County Supervisor of Elections Michael S. Bennett; and Byron Shinn, managing partner of accounting firm Shinn & Co. Shinn is also a USF alum, as well as a member of the USF Board of Trustees and USF Sarasota-Manatee Campus Board.
The all-day tour is supported by Enterprise Rent-A-Car and is intended to show students of all levels and majors the career and internship opportunities available at local government, from accountants to I.T. specialists.
It’s one example of the strengthening ties between Manatee County and USF Sarasota-Manatee. In addition to the array of career and internship possibilities, the sides are exploring possible mentorships, job shadowing, specialized training and additional tours.
USFSM is committed to working with local employers like Manatee County to identify meaningful careers for graduates.
“This is a terrific opportunity for our students to connect with professionals from Manatee County to learn about the wide variety of careers that are available in the public service sector,” USFSM Regional Chancellor Dr. Sandra Stone said. “We are so fortunate to have such a strong partnership with Manatee County and we are extremely thankful for allowing our students to connect through this County Career Connections event.”
Leading the orientation with the USFSM students Thursday will be the “Manatee Millennial Movement,” a group of up-and-coming county leaders whose role is to improve county-community ties through local events and civic engagement. The team members will introduce the students to the range of services offered by Manatee County and explain their own career experiences in local government.
“We’ve enjoyed a strong alliance with our friends at USF Sarasota-Manatee for a number of years, but this partnership offers great potential for the future,” Manatee County Administrator Ed Hunzeker said. “USFSM students, we think, will see the opportunity, value and importance of a career in public service.
“If the partnership results in new internships and future job applicants with the county, we’ll be tapping into a pipeline of local talent and ideas,” he said. “We’re looking for great things to come from County Career Connections.”
